“I’m going to the UK, but a part of me wants to relax on a beach down South…” Oh a common woe of many of you readers. Well, to all of you that share the same yearning I say “strap on your sandals, pack your bathing suit and apply that sunscreen because this month, we’re embracing summer and hitting the beach!” I know some of you might be a tad confused since ‘Beach’ and ‘Britain’ are words not often used together, but trust me when I say not to leave your flippers behind!
If you’re headed to the UK on holiday, but still wanted to soak in the sun, then how about heading south to St Ives! (From London Paddington Station, the journey is roughly 5.5 hours to the St Ives Station). This beach city has something for everyone and is sure to leave travelers relaxed, refreshed and revitalized.
Upon arriving in St. Ives, I suggest taking some time to just wander the cobbled streets and soak up the great energy and culture of the city. Around every twist and turn, St. Ives offers up fantastic art galleries, mouth watering restaurants, laid back cafes and, for all you shopaholics out there, a number of unique boutiques!
Once you’re done getting acquainted with the city its time to let loose and hit the beaches! That’s right, I said beach(es). In fact, St Ives has a number of different beaches to enjoy, each offering something a little different. The golden sand of Porthminster and Carbis beach are great for families while the more adventurous type might want to head over to Porthmeor beach, known as a hot spot for surfers and body-boarders. If you’re looking for a quieter place to work on your tan, then Porthgwidden beach is for you.
If you want to take a break from relaxing on your beach towel, then head on over to the Tate St. Ives and enjoy a day appreciating some of the best modern and contemporary art in the UK. As if that weren’t enough, the museum also manages the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, another must see for any art lover.
